Careers in the field of sales increase your self-worth

Have you ever heard the story of a seller who was able to sell a brush to a bald monk? This story is always told in a motivational program. Let me tell you a little story.

A comb manufacturer offers job opportunities in the marketing sector. More than 100 people came for the interview.

After going through a fairly strict selection process, three main candidates were selected. Mention it A, B and C. The company assigns tasks to three selected people. A, B and C are asked to sell hair combs to Buddhist monks within 10 days. For some people, this task does not make sense because Buddhist monks are bald and do not need a hair comb.

Selling combs to monks

Ten days have passed, finally, all three candidates returned to the office to report the results of their sales.

Candidate A: I can only sell one brush. I had tried to offer the comb to the Buddhist monks there but they were angry because I was considered to be mocking them. But fortunately, when I walked down the stairs there was a young monk who wanted to buy a brush from me. The brush was used to scratch his scabies head.

Candidate B: I managed to sell ten brushes. I went to a Siamese wat and saw many visitors whose hair was not neat because of the strong wind blowing outside the wat. The Buddhist monks in the wat listened to my suggestion and bought 10 hair comb for the visitors so that they would show respect to the Buddha while praying.

Candidate C: I managed to sell a thousand brushes. After observing a few days in the Siamese wat, I saw many tourists who came to visit there. Then I said to the chief of the Buddhist monks, “Sir, I see many pilgrims coming here. If you can give them a souvenir, then it will make their hearts happier “. I told him I had a lot of nice and cheap brushes. I then asked the chief monk to put a signature on each comb as a gift for the pilgrims in the Siamese wat. The chief monk agreed and immediately ordered 1,000 combs.

Eventually, the brush manufacturer accepted the three people as its new employees. Candidate C is selected as the Marketing Manager, candidate B is the assistant manager and candidate A is the regular marketing officer.

Didn’t you notice that in this story, the value of Candidate C is higher than Candidates A and B? This value can not be free but is the result of efforts to improve themselves and hone their skills in talking to others. As long as you open your mouth, the money will come in. Most of the company would be eyeing to offer a job to Candidate C, if he is fortunate enough, he can be a liaison between 2 giant corporates for collaboration. Imagine that he can establish a collaboration between Google and Huawei in a spaceship project to compete with SpaceX for example. Great right? Oh, my.

My last post has already given 3 reasons why you should consider sales as your career. This time I’ll tell you another 4 reasons.

4. Continuous skill development.

Too many skills can be developed in a sales career, and these skills are constantly being upgraded all the time. For example, when the latest techniques, technologies and trends emerge, you will feel like it has been used and proven whether it is successful or not, but with the change of time, skills that may once not be used but are now proven to be successful.

I have met some sales executives who are quite senior and great in training sessions and seminars. They have high communication and technical skills, but they still feel there are many more things they need to learn. These people are great, right?

5. Stepping stones for a career that is craving.

Honestly, my childhood dream was to become a scientist. Influenced by the National Geographic and Discovery Channel shows on TV1 and TV2, I dreamed of being able to travel all over the world to study and observe life and plants. For those of you who have ambitions to become chefs, fashion designers, football players, teachers, police and others, a sales career is a career that can be a stepping stone for the career you dream of.

In an analysis conducted by CSO Insight research, they found that most professionals such as managers, trainees, executives, marketing officers, technical experts, and college professors have backgrounds in sales and they acknowledge the need for skills acquired while working in sales.

For those of you who have just finished studying or who want to change jobs, a sales career is right for you before you can be able to enter into any career field you desire.

6. Improve the in-demand skills.

Sales are soft skills.

Soft skills are a combination of social skills, communication, personality, attitudes, social and emotional intelligence, the ability to drive others in their environment, work well together, and the ability to help others achieve their goals.

Therefore, upgrading soft skills is a very good investment for you and your career.

I give you some examples of soft skills you can improve.

  1. Creativity
  2. Influential
  3. Communications
  4. Cooperation
  5. Accessibility
  6. Time management
  7. Conflict Management
  8. Stress management
  9. Customer service
  10. Emotional intelligence (EQ)
  11. Storytelling

Try to improve one of these skills, I believe that your self-worth would be increased.

7. Great challenges and rewards

People like to win and feel like their work makes a difference to their surroundings.

Knowing that your efforts are beating your competition and helping your customers solve business problems can be more rewarding than earning money.

While emotional rewards differ drastically from different sales experiences, your joy in sales revenue, income rewards, sales-related flexibility, and the fact that you create and get jobs for others to make career choices in sales are very appealing and worth considering.
